Eunji’s exhibition surrounds us with the subtle sensitivity of the object, the self, and the space.
The artist, who is known for her white and black spaces, this time draws invisible threads of grey everywhere. Bodies infiltrate bodies and inhabit them, move inside them, but instead of causing chaos, they bring peace and euphony.
From two contrasting works, the breathing shell, and a sketch of a cloud of darkness lifted by two little feet, the body of work expands with modes of existence, with surfaces, textures, densities, hyper dancing lines, people, and time; they sneak up on you with light, sound, touch, and layers of meaning and references.
The shell that glows, sustains itself, and sounds as if it were located in a dreamy world underwater, stands with walls that (I believe) couldn’t escape the urban slums metal sheets reference, pulling the magical shell back to reality, and above water surface, or leaving it underwater to imply pressure and weight that cannot be seen in the work.
I knew from earlier that the objects Eunji touches come to life; broken dishes, textiles, invisible walls, even metal… but in this very specific exhibition, I was amazed by her ability to transform the weight of darkness into a light, living place/ being.
